The first book draws on The War of the Worlds as its main inspiration, while as the name would suggest The Feaster from the Stars takes its cues from the Cthulhu Mythos. One of the most ambitious debuts I've see, and one that explores a lot of different angles--isolated planet, long conflict, religious and political drift, very strange bugs under partial human control. Actually a lot of stuff by Night Shade books would be a decent place to start, they do a lot of newer authors with a fairly good range of quality and going beyond familiar SF patterns.
